We currently grow two varieties of Asparagus. All are grown in 9cm pots. They are generally available from week 8 onwards. All pots come with a colour card and are grown with slow release fertiliser incorporated to prolong the shelf life. Mary Washington - produces a heavy crop of tender, delicious, thick spears of rich dark green with a purple tinge. Connovers Colossal - produces a good crop of fairly thick spears, the foliage is also good for flower arranging. | Asparagus needs a deep, loamy well drained, bed with plenty of organic manure, old mushroom compost or seaweed added.
It should not be harvested for the first two years. From the third year onwards, cut the spears during May and early June as they come ready over a six week period. |
